Apocalypses and Visions, Jaroslav Róna and Barbora Půtová
Entering the imaginary world of Jaroslav Róna and uncovering his intimate artistic dreams helps us understand the goals of his work and decipher the broad thematic range and repertoire of motifs in his creations. The artist’s work consciously reflects the social, cultural, and political context, vividly responding to key artistic figures, contemporary trends, and the current art scene. His paintings can be perceived as a critical probe leading to an existential reflection on the meaning and purpose of human life and the transformations of society. His entire body of work is imbued with rich life experience, boundless creative imagination, a distinctive artistic style, and technical and expressive virtuosity. Particularly striking are his compositions of apocalypses and visions, evoking both potential and real issues of today’s world that threaten to lead to the downfall of human civilization.

The book is uniquely signed by the author.

Price: 1200 CZK

An elaborate photographic publication dedicated to the sculptures of painter and sculptor Jaroslav Róna, known to the public primarily for his monumental works in public spaces: the Franz Kafka monument in Prague, the equestrian statue of Jobst of Luxembourg in Brno, or the Mythical Ship in Bratislava. The book presents the artist’s work in the specific field of sculptures depicting fantastical architecture – archaic, mythological, Orwellian, and futuristic. Photographer Robert Portel, with an eye for detail, draws the reader into the artist’s magical world. Art theorist Ladislav Kesner places his unique work in our country within the global artistic context through his expert text. Graphic design by Jan Havel.

The book is originally signed by the author.

Jaroslav Róna is not only the creator of monumental sculptures and large-scale paintings, as the public has come to perceive him in recent years. He also enjoys working with drawing and illustration—recall, for example, his interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories in The Demon of Perversity or his authentic visual take on Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. This particular book collection presents Róna’s “travel sketches,” created during moments of relaxation and best described as a kind of semi-automatic drawing. Despite their apparent spontaneity, these works unmistakably reveal Róna’s artistic identity. His favorite motifs and his distinctive sense of humor regularly appear in them. Róna’s drawings—much more subtle than his other works—offer a glimpse into his subconscious, a lifting of the lid on the crucible of his mind. Given their smaller format, they are often more approachable than Róna’s large-scale sculptures.

Publication released on the occasion of the exhibition Jaroslav Róna, 1997-2017 held at the House of the Stone Bell (June 23 – October 29, 2017). Jaroslav Róna (*1957) entered the awareness of the broader cultural public as a co-founder of the most significant artistic association of the 1980s generation, the Stubborn group. Already within this group, Róna established himself as a distinctive original personality who stood out from the trends of the time, which was convincingly demonstrated by his first major solo exhibition, organized by GHMP in 1997 at the House of the Stone Bell. Today – after twenty years – we return to Róna’s work in the same exhibition space. The new exhibition, which chronologically follows works from 1997, includes sculptural and painting works from the last twenty years.

A large representative monograph (440 pages, 30 x 25 cm) of the painter and sculptor, founder of the Tvrdohlaví group, also documents Róna’s other activities – his own literary work, participation in the 80s theatre movement Pražská pětka, directorial and screenwriting work at the Mimoza theatre, and acting and poetic work at the Sklep theatre.

If we enter Jaroslav Róna’s imaginary world and uncover his innermost artistic dreams, it will help us understand the goals of the artist’s work and decipher the wide thematic register and repertoire of motifs in his work. The painter’s work consciously reflects the social, cultural, and political context and reacts vividly to key artistic figures, contemporary trends and tendencies, or the current art scene. His paintings can be perceived as a critical probe leading to an existential reflection on the meaning and goals of human life and societal changes.

The entire body of the painter’s work reflects a rich life experience, inexhaustible creative imagination, a distinctive artistic style, and technical and expressive virtuosity. Particularly compelling are the pictorial compositions, apocalypses, and visions that remind us of the potential and real problems of the contemporary world, which threaten to result in the extinction of human civilization.

or many years, both at home and while traveling, Jaroslav Róna created what he called his “obsessive drawings”—works filled with unease, a concrete visual language, and layers of symbolic meaning. Most of them are accompanied by Róna’s own short texts or literary quotations. Together, the drawings have formed a remarkable cycle that draws the viewer (or reader) into Róna’s urgent, raw inner world—one that reflects the unsettling aspects of the outer world. This book brings together the complete cycle of Róna’s drawings and texts, accompanied by an afterword by Jiří Olič.
